EKFB completes beam installation at West Street Overbridge

EKFB has successfully marked the completion of the beam installation at the West Street Overbridge, near Calvert. The West Street Overbridge will be a key road structure linking local villages, Twyford, Calvert, and Steeple Claydon over the high-speed railway line.

The overbridge is being constructed on the path of the existing Steeple Claydon Road, while a temporary road realignment is in operation adjacent to the structure. Once complete, the overbridge will span 60 metres in length, allowing road users and utilities to cross over the HS2 route below.

The 10 U-shaped pre-cast concrete beams are manufactured off-site in Ireland by supply chain partners Banagher Precast Concrete. Made up of a combination of 20m3 of concrete and four tonnes of steel, each of the beams weigh 50 tonnes and spans 30 metres in length.

Using a specialist 600-tonne crane to lift the beams into position, the intricate process took a total of six days to complete.

West Street Overbridge is one of 81 bridges being built by EKFB. Marking the completion of the beam installation, the beams will be carefully lowered onto the bearings before proceeding with the formation of the deck. A series of road closures will follow to complete the tie in back onto the existing road.

EKFB’s Project Director, Mimi El-Sanhouri, said:

“EKFB and our sub-contractor partners are delighted to mark the completion of the beam installation for West Street Overbridge. This is a great milestone achieved not only for our teams, but for the wider C23 construction programme. Reaching this milestone will now allow us to continue this momentum for the next stage of construction.”
